The Sinking City 2 Struggles With Its Lead Characters

The Sinking City 2 brings classic horror themes into a survival combat experience. The story follows Calvin Rafferty, who is trying to save his girlfriend Faye after a failed occult ritual leaves her in a coma and turns their home of Arkham into a chaotic, flooded nightmare. The game captures a fantastic atmosphere of dread, filled with monsters and a collapsing society that keeps the tension high.

While the world design is excellent, the two main characters often get in the way of the experience. Calvin and Faye are naive and responsible for the chaos, yet they show little growth or reflection as they focus entirely on their own survival. It is much more rewarding to focus on the side characters, the eerie radios, and the notes scattered throughout the city that explain the town's slow descent into madness.

The gameplay itself offers a mix of detective work and brutal survival. You spend your time exploring locations like hospitals and hotels, solving clever puzzles, and gathering resources to stay alive. The combat is tough and requires careful management of your limited inventory. Finding powerful weapons and earning talent points to upgrade your skills makes for a satisfying loop, even if the primary motivation to save the leads feels less interesting than the mysteries hidden in the environment.
