Review: Does Netflix Thriller The Secret Woman Deliver?

The Secret Woman arrives on Netflix with plenty of initial promise. Directed by Barbara Topsøe Rothenborg, the story follows an amnesiac named Louise who discovers she has a family and a major shipping empire waiting for her. Watching her try to piece together a forgotten life, especially one that includes a child, starts off as a genuinely compelling premise.

Unfortunately, the nearly two hour runtime shifts away from those emotional struggles to focus on a mystery that never quite comes together. While the plot features a few solid twists, the film lacks the necessary tension and drama to pull viewers in. Important scenes, like a suspenseful alley chase, fall flat because uninspiring camera angles, flat lighting, and subdued acting keep the danger at arm's length.

On the bright side, the pacing keeps things moving without lingering too long on any single moment. The final confrontation suffers when the villains spend too much time explaining their past actions instead of acting threatening. In the end, it makes for a forgettable viewing experience when compared to other thrillers currently available on streaming.
