Love Language introduces us to Louisa, or Lou, as she tries to rebuild her life after a painful breakup. She finds an unexpected career path writing wedding vows for others, but things get complicated when she is hired to write vows for a woman marrying her college crush. It is a messy setup that requires a lot of care, and the film does a great job keeping Lou likable even when she makes some questionable choices.

Chloë Grace Moretz gives a fantastic performance that highlights the internal conflict Lou faces throughout the movie. She is clearly tempted to use her position to interfere in the relationship, yet she is constantly held back by her own conscience. These moments of guilt and hesitation make her feel like a real person rather than a caricature. She makes mistakes, but the story pushes her to own up to them and face the consequences.

While the main story hits all the right emotional notes, the secondary plot involving a character named Dash feels a bit thin. Dash is presented as being almost too perfect, which makes his romance with Lou feel less grounded than the rest of the film. He comes across more as a prop to highlight Lou’s indecision rather than a fully developed person, which is a bit of a shame given how strong the central narrative is.

Despite the weaker side plot, Love Language succeeds because it captures the messy, imperfect nature of being human. It is a thoughtful look at how we struggle with our own insecurities and the risks we take when we try to move on. If you enjoy character driven stories, you can catch the film in select theaters or on digital platforms starting October 23.
