Jake Johnson Struggles to Find the Serve in The Dink

The Dink brings us a classic underdog story starring Jake Johnson as Dusty Boyd. Dusty is a former tennis prodigy stuck in a rut as a country club coach under the thumb of his demanding father. When a physical injury forces him to swap his tennis racket for a pickleball paddle, he finds a new community and a chance to prove his worth beyond his father’s narrow expectations.

Jake Johnson fits this role like a glove. He excels at playing characters who are lovable but emotionally stuck, and he brings plenty of physical comedy to the screen. Mary Steenburgen also shines as his pickleball partner, Candace. Their friendship provides the heart of the movie, making it a shame that the script forces an unnecessary romantic tension that feels out of place.

While the movie succeeds as a lighthearted comedy, it struggles to break new ground. It follows the standard blueprint of sports films from years ago, focusing on the same predictable father and son conflicts and eccentric side characters. The jokes often overstay their welcome, lingering long after the punchline has landed instead of moving the story forward.

If you are in the mood for a simple and familiar comedy, The Dink provides a decent amount of laughs. It works best when it embraces the absurdity of its premise rather than trying to force emotional beats that the script does not fully support. It is a fun watch for fans of the genre, even if it does not quite reach the top of its game.
