Finding Emily Is A Sweet Romcom With A Charming Premise

Finding Emily introduces us to Owen, a sound engineer at Manchester City University who hits it off with a girl named Emily at a party. After she leaves, he realizes he has an incomplete phone number and sets out on a mission to find her among the 318 students on campus with that name. Along the way, he meets another Emily, an American psychology student who decides to help him as part of a research project for her dissertation on the nature of love.

The film succeeds largely thanks to the performance of Angourie Rice, who brings wit and energy to her role, perfectly balancing Spike Fearn’s earnest and slightly awkward portrayal of Owen. The chemistry between the two leads is the heart of the story, and the setting of Manchester provides a beautiful backdrop that feels fresh compared to the usual London based settings.

However, the movie struggles when it moves away from its two leads. Many of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped, appearing only when the plot requires a bit of external advice or a forced conflict. Even a talented actress like Minnie Driver is underused in a role that ends up feeling disconnected from the main journey.

While the film is self aware about the potentially awkward nature of Owen’s search, it sometimes overexplains the ethics of the situation through its side characters rather than letting the audience decide for themselves. If you are looking for a lighthearted and cozy watch that captures a bit of modern romance, it is a fun choice, even if it does not quite reach the heights of classic romantic comedies.
