The high stakes of Dark Knights of Steel II continue in the second issue as Zala faces a mysterious poisoning on her wedding day. The story wastes no time picking up right where the previous chapter left off. As Zala fights for her life, the once strong union between the Kingdom of Storms, the Amazons, and the Els begins to show cracks. Suspicion is rampant, and the political stability of the region is falling apart rapidly.

Writer Tom Taylor manages to keep the momentum high, moving characters between castles and city streets with great speed. While some plot twists are easy to spot, the real surprise comes from the emotional fallout. Seeing how these classic characters, like Wonder Woman and Supergirl, handle trauma in this alternate universe is what makes the series stand out. The bond between Zala and Diana is particularly central to the drama, making the threat against them feel deeply personal.

Visually, Otto Schmidt delivers fantastic work. The character expressions are clear and emotive, perfectly conveying vulnerability and tension. The action scenes are kinetic and show the brutal consequences of a kingdom in turmoil. Arif Prianto adds to the atmosphere with vibrant colors, using light to reflect the wealth of the El family or the gloom of darker scenes.

This issue does an excellent job of setting the stage for a massive conflict. With Aquaman making moves to reclaim his kingdom and new threats lurking in the shadows, the stage is set for an epic war. It is a compelling read that balances personal tragedy with large scale political instability.
