The long awaited wedding of Miyo and Kiyoka finally arrives in the new My Happy Marriage specials. While fans were excited to see the couple tie the knot after Miyo's long journey from abuse to happiness, the narrative takes a turn that feels completely at odds with what we have learned about these characters so far. Instead of a celebration, the episodes focus on a troubling conflict that changes how we view the male lead.

Kiyoka has always been portrayed as a man who is misunderstood. While he appears cold to the world, the series has consistently shown us his compassionate and awkward side. Unfortunately, these new specials discard that growth. When a woman named Kimio approaches him for help after enduring a brutal life, Kiyoka chooses to turn his back on her. Seeing him ignore someone in clear pain makes his cold exterior feel less like a defense mechanism and more like a lack of genuine empathy.

It is hard to reconcile this version of Kiyoka with the man who saved Miyo. The story tries to frame the wedding day as a happy conclusion, but the emotional damage done to the protagonist’s image makes it difficult to enjoy the celebration. The visuals and animation are as beautiful as ever, but the writing misses the mark by undermining the character development we have followed for two seasons.

If you are a diehard fan who just wants to see the wedding, you might find some enjoyment in the final scenes. However, be prepared to feel frustrated by how the story handles its lead characters. The specials are currently available to stream on Netflix.
