NBA 2K27 Shows Digital Sales Now Dominate Sports Games

New data shows that while NBA 2K27 is a huge financial success, fans are almost entirely buying the game digitally. Physical discs accounted for only 4.6 percent of the total revenue generated on PlayStation platforms. This equates to about 9.9 million dollars out of a massive 213.4 million dollar total.

Even though the game is performing well as the third highest grossing new title on PlayStation for 2026, it ranks much lower when looking only at physical sales. It sits at 16th place in that category. This clearly shows that players prefer the convenience of digital downloads over going to a store to pick up a box.

This trend is common for sports titles which often see players jump into the action as soon as the game goes live. As digital libraries continue to grow, physical retail copies for big sports franchises seem to be losing their foothold in the market.
