Ghost in the Shell Episode 8 Review: Major Kusanagi at a Breaking Point

The latest episode of Ghost in the Shell titled Intermission + Brain Drain i takes a fascinating turn. It splits its time between revealing the origins of the Puppet Master and showing us the immediate aftermath of Kusanagi's recent encounter. Seeing the Puppet Master's beginning from its own perspective really hammers home that this entity is far more than just a standard computer program.

The most compelling part of this episode is seeing Kusanagi deal with the fallout of her experience. She is listless and drained of her usual focus. It is a striking change for a character who is typically so sharp and energetic. Watching her struggle to process these events makes for some great storytelling because it keeps the audience guessing about exactly what happened to her during that connection.

The episode concludes with a tense operation that goes wrong. Section 9 attempts to apprehend a target on a yacht, but the mission fails when Kusanagi kills the suspect instead of taking them in for questioning. It is clear this mistake happened because she is not in the right headspace. Her team notices, but nobody seems to know how to handle it yet.

Just when the tension hits its peak, Aramaki discovers that someone has recorded the incident. They are framing Section 9 as an assassination squad, and the group is now under active threat. It is a fantastic setup for the next chapter, and fans are left wondering how Section 9 can navigate this sudden crisis while their leader is struggling.
