Dexter: Resurrection is back for its second season, and the first two episodes bring a mix of exciting thrills and noticeable stumbles. After taking down Leon Prater and his secret society of killers, Dexter Morgan is back to driving rideshark and tracking down New York City criminals. Michael C. Hall slips right back into the role with ease, showing us a Dexter who is trying to handle the realities of getting older and juggling multiple responsibilities.

The new villains are definitely a highlight of the premiere. Dan Stevens joins the cast as the terrifying Five Borough Killer, while Gabriel Luna makes a bone chilling appearance as the Sleepy Eyed Stranger. We also get Brian Cox hamming it up as the New York Ripper, adding plenty of star power and dark humor to the episodes.

At the same time, some cracks are starting to show in the narrative. Harrison's new career in the New York City Police Department feels slow and lacks the charm of the original Miami Metro squad. The tone also swings a bit too far into silly territory, making it feel less dangerous than past seasons.

Despite a few pacing issues and too many plots running at once, the season premiere holds plenty of promise. Fans can look forward to seeing how these stories connect when Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 starts streaming on Paramount+ on October 30.
